SOFT LASERS
Today bio-stimulating lasers are being introduced to stomatological surgeries on a large scale. Bio-stimulation causes the unblocking of certain biochemical processes in the tissues of the oral cavity. The emitted light stimulates the body's cells to action. Energetic centres of the cells (mitochondria storing energy and ribosomes, where the synthesis of protein takes place) begin to work more efficiently. Therefore, the cellular metabolism of the whole body is improved. The lasers' rays of: helium and neon, of a low power (used in bio-stimulation) and of semiconductor of medium power - are safe. The laser beam, if used properly, does not have any side effects. It can, however, pose a danger to the eyes. For this reason they have to be protected by special glasses. In stomatology, laser light is introduced up to 1 cm into the skin. The bio-stimulation activity makes, in many cases, the pain and inflammation symptoms to cease (the liquidation of the swelling after the treatment), as well as accelerates the regeneration of the tissues. Therefore it supports the traditional treatment, making it more bearable for the patient. It makes it possible to resign from antibiotics, and from anaesthetics in case of less complex operations. This is extremely important for people with allergies or lowered immunity. Bio-stimulation is very effective in the treatment of the inflammation of the mucous membrane, in the liquidation of aphthae in the oral cavity, in the healing of prosthesis bedsores, prolongation of the remission period in persons infected with the cold-sore virus. Laser treatment repeated regularly when this infection becomes active leads at times to the complete removal of the disease. If just after the tooth extraction the dry socket is exposed to laser rays (when the clot has not been created yet), the gum pain will be less. Also, there will be no swelling. Bio-stimulating lasers give relief to people, whose late teeth are erupting. This process can be so uncomfortable, that it immobilises the joints of the jaw. Bio-stimulation not only stops the pain, but it also gets you rid of the trismus and stimulates the tooth to erupt over the gum's surface. However, bio-stimulating lasers should be used moderately and with exact precision. This means a proper diagnosis in the first place. Laser rays may uncontrolled processes, such as the multiplication of cancer cells, if applied unnecessarily or in the wrong place. In children with milk teeth and the permanent teeth buds, reckless application of the rays may induce premature growth of permanent teeth. Stomatologists avoid also laser treatment in pregnant women, as the influence of electromagnetic rays on the foetus is not completely explained yet. As a rule, laser is also not used in people just after a heart attack or with diabetes, because during such an operation the blood vessels first dilate, and then become sealed and constricted.
